Vanadium flow batteries can be used for utility purposes including:

  • Ancillary services for the grid
  • Replacement or addition of peaking capacity
  • Firming and capture of renewable generation from wind and solar

Ancillary services for the grid

Frequency regulation, voltage support, energy reserves and wholesale marketing of energy.

VFBs make time shifting of energy possible, ranging from seconds to 8 hours and more. Our technology is the key to hedge and secure against grid instability.

VFBs provide regulation for all control reserves. Capacity can be varied to suit your requirements.

Replacement or addition of peaking capacity

This applies to network providers, grid-connected and off-grid energy consumers. ‘Peak load’ which refers to the maximum amount of instantaneous power required – can be costly to provide for as it means infrastructure – including power poles, overhead wires, transformers and even solar PV (photovoltaic) and battery storage systems – need to be sized at the upper limit of this demand, even if it only occurs for a small period of time. VFBs provide perfect long energy storage and delivery to cut peak demand and spread energy demand more evenly throughout the day or night.

Firming and capture of renewable generation from wind and solar

Long duration time shifting to store surplus daytime energy generation and transfer it to the evening or other peak demand hours.  Combining flow battery energy storage with renewable generation allows for a smooth grid integration and avoid curtailment and inconsistent energy delivery.
